I am new to selling on Amazon and I’m hoping that someone can help me. I was selling on the rival gangs site (starts with an E and ends with a Y) quite successfully for 16 years. But they’ve gone downhill ever since Meg left. I had tried in the past to start selling on Amazon but always got frustrated with how different it is and how completely un-user (seller) friendly it is. But I told myself that today was THE day for me to get over my breakup and get busy listing on Amazon. Now before I start criticizing, please note that I want help. Problem #1 today: I tried to list a DVD, DENIED! It stated that I must get approval. Clicked “Get Approval”, it then stated that I must pay them $39 to upgrade to Professional plus a few other things. Umm No, for the same reason Ive never advised anyone to open a “Store” until they’ve established themselves on the site and learned the ropes. Problem #2: I tried to list a dental product, DENIED again. It stated yet again that I must get approval and then pay them $39. Problem #3: I tried to list a Disney lanyard. To my amazement, it was actually going to let me list it! Oh… don’t get too excited Chris. There are zero of the same lanyards currently for sale on Amazon, so I was forced to “create my own”. That led me to the world’s LONGEST listing form on the planet! Did it really just ask me if the product was flammable? Ummm, if you hold a lighter to it long enough, I’m thinking that the nylon might catch fire yes. I’m being a smart a$$ but still, it was asking me EVERY question under the sun! A turn off…. big time! Problem #4: I complete the forms that are longer than a mortgage application and it then informs me that quote “Model Number: the value specified cannot be used as it conflicts with the Amazon value “Monsters University” What? Huh? No, they were not referring to a UPC. I had already listed that. It then negates to tell me what I am suppose to do in this situation. Thanks Amazon! Thoughts of pulling my hair out started to enter my mind. Problem #5: I click around to find an Amazon Seller Support phone number to call…. DENIED. But email sent. I apologize for being long winded, but I am super frustrated and hoping that my fellow online marketplace sellers can relate and help a brother out.

I sure hope you plan on selling at least 40 items a month… which means you should be a professional seller anyways… so I guess I would say don’t use Amazon if you aren’t a professional seller with professional goals. Second, I wouldn’t start listing anything until you learn all of the rules and read through tons of old posts, Amazon doesn’t mess around, if you mess up you are out, forever.

Amazon has many categories that need prior approval to sell in (gated categories.) As you found DVDs with a MSRP of more than $25 (I think), and health are some of those categories. Google Amazon gated categories. I only fill in the required information and key search terms when creating a listing. Be sure to search by name and UPC both to check if it is in the Amazon catalog. You may find it comes up under one and not the other.
