I am trying to order a sample from a supplier. He is saying that the cost of the sample would not be credited when I place my first order. Cost of sample $125 plus shipping! Any opinions of what I should do?

Unless you’re ordering a substantial order, most suppliers will not credit you the sample fee. No one knows how much you’re investing in your first order, so, it’s hard to give an appropriate response. In my case, each supplier has told me they will credit me my sample fees if I hit a specific MOQ. But, in all honesty, you should bake your sample into R&D costs… if you run the numbers, you should be able to absorb all R&D costs on your first batch.

I understand your point but supplier later changed MOQ from 2000 to 5000 and that brings me close 10k just for the product alone. This is my first product. That’s just too much to start

it seems I have been working with sales reps for the manufacturer. He said that he checked with his production manufacturer and the actual MOQ for a custom design is 5000pcs not the initial 2000 he quoted me earlier 2 weeks ago

Yikes… That’s a big increase…

Did your supplier give you a reason for the increase in MOQ…?

I had a supplier increase the MOQ because I requested a specific type of material. Better quality than the one they were offering.

 Everything is negotiable.
Tell him you have another potential supplier that is prepared to credit the sample cost.
Or find another supplier if you are not happy!
