In case you didn’t know or want to think about this.
When you sell a generic product that you “worked so hard” to find online, I mean found on Alibaba after a few hours, or maybe days of searching. You should realize that you do not suddenly have entitlement to this product, or niche. When you start to make some coin with the product, someone will eventually copy you. Whether it’s another competitor here, overseas, or even the manufacturer themselves. Here are several ways how others will try to copy you.
1) Another seller will copy you and sell on their own listing. Either same or perhaps change color, size, material, bundle it with an E-book to make their product stand out. Nonetheless, they want your money.
2) Another seller will hijack your listing, usually inexperienced Chinese sellers or American resellers(who buys your stuff at a discount), both are scum bags in my books. In essence, they want your money.
3) The manufacturer themselves may also want your piece of pie by cutting you out. Not all the factories will do this, but a lot will in the future. It’s inevitable, and here is why.
Think of it this way. For example, your PL brand gets bigger. You can now afford to build your own factory to make your own products for cheaper. You have more control over how you make them and distribute them, and your own price. Would you not cut your previous manufacturer out? Why source from them right? It’s the same as this factory right now, they now know how to sell their own products in USA without you, as the middlemen. They can dictate their own price, and make more money as the result. They don’t have to rely on you, or other sellers for their business. They would be stupid for not cutting you out. Why? Again, they want more money.
In conclusion, in an ideal world, all PL sellers want to magically discover an untouched niche, launch their “unique” product and forever make money selling the same product. In the real world, you will see copycats or hijackers within a few months after you launch your product. Of course, you have to be making money first, no one will copy you if your product is a dud. 🙂
Business is cutthroat. Big american corporations got to where they are because they put smaller or medium sized businesses like you OUT of business at some point. If you are going to be pissed off because something like this will happen, then this business is NOT for you.
I don’t want to discourage anyone from selling on Amazon, but you just have to be mentally prepared for this because it will happen. There is no doubt about it. On the bright side, if it happens to you, at least it means you are making money. Is this really happen to anyone?
Realize your product will have a very short shelf life. I mean very short. So you either need to have a patented product very hard to copy or you get your product out there, milk it good, for as long as you can muster, then move on. Always be looking for products. Don’t just pick 1 or 2, quit your day job, and think those 2 will pay your bills until you die. Ain’t gonna happen! With all these research tools and “gurus” selling courses to take your $ and in essence telling everyone how to do this business, your time to make $ on product “X” is real short.
I been reading a lot of the posts on these Facebook pages lately. People are complaining that someone’s copying them, hijacking them, or even manufacturers sell their exact product – thereby putting them out of business. The Amazon PL business started out as a free-for-all, anyone can make a quick buck gold rush. However, nowadays, you really have to treat it like a legit business where you have to really put in a lot of time, effort, and creativity. A little luck and business instinct will help too
