I have an alarming issue, any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. My Chinese supplier informed me that I need to pay 80 USD ‘customs clearance fee’ when my product is shipped from China. I assume this is not USA import tax. They claim that if I did not register the order via the Alibaba Trade Assurance I would not need to pay this. Is this true or am I being ripped off? (I paste their email below)

The “custom clearance fee” means when all the goods export to other country,it needs to pay the handle fee to the custom.

But if we won’t confirm the order at Alibaba at the begining,it won’t cause the custom clearance fees.
We can only send you the goods via UPS without any other fees.
We can try this at next order if you want.
By the way,if we quote you FOB price, the custom clearance fee will include in the unit price.
Still have doubts, please let me know”

The first thing that comes to my mind is that “if he could dominate the market, you could do it too”. I’ve seen a lot of great advice on JS screen shots. if you could upload it, you would probably get good comments on that hopefully.

It would be stupid to stall the launch of the new product now. But I need to know what this fee is. Did you have any experience with this

My business partner takes care of most of the shipping part, but I know we paid a $500 and to this day I don’t know if that was necessary, but our freight forwarding company told us we had to, then $200 to ship from supplier to main China port then $1,600 to ship to US then several hundred to our freight forwarding co. The fee you are talking about could be in the mix, but I’d have to look it up.

Just my 2 cents-ask until you are clear what this is. As a business owner you should know your expenses. And be clear where your money is going. Not just now but for future transactions.
