Once you become eligible for buy boxes, you also have other sellers on those listings you are competing with. Some items, no one has the buy box, but you may see your name in the box on the side, it may be that you have a high price but the others are less reliable than you as sellers. They do not tell you exactly what the criteria it is, but assuming it is metrics, price, recent feedback, and longevity related.
Keep your metrics good and you will eventually get the buy boxes. Offer really good prices to begin with and if you are listing these yourself, provide good keywords so the items can be found to naturally increase sales.
As you find your buy boxes are eligible, you can click the drop box to set up the advertising and from there it will go off and on as you gain and lose the buy box.
A seller having the ‘Add to Cart’ button on the main product page is called the ‘Buy Box’. The Buy Box is reserved for Featured Merchants. These are sellers that have a successful track history of selling and fulfilling orders to Amazon’s standards. Amazon grants this to sellers they trust can fulfill orders to their customer’s expectations.
If you are a new seller then it is likely the category managers have not yet approved you as eligible.
The best you can do is enable the ‘Buy Box Eligible’ column in your Manage Inventory so you can see when/if your status changes. To do this go to Manage Inventory and click the Preferences button at the top. Check the box for Buy Box Eligible and then click ‘Save Changes’ at the bottom of the page.
If it says ‘No’ in the buy box for this item, then this is why you do not have it.
Depending on the category you are selling in, and your sales volume and metrics, it can be months or even a year or more before the department managers give you this status so you can have the Buy Box.
