i am trying to order my first sample thru alibaba. I tried to place order and pay thru the alibaba system. the supplier is a gold supplier, but says the following :
Because this is a sample order, we cannot do this in Trade Assurance, trade assurance is so complicated that is not suitable for a sample order.
But we can use Trade Assurance if you want to make the first order with us.
Is it ok?
Pls check your email, the official Alibaba will send an email for your confirm.
Hope you could cancle this Trade Assurance and confirm the security payment, we will send the sample as soon as we receive your payment.
Is there something i need to watch out for at this point? how are samples usually paid for? do you just send the money to their company in paypal or something else?

Interesting, I just paid for a sample where the factory requested that I pay through Trade Assurance vs Paypal. The rep said it helped them look good through the eyes of Alibaba; “like reviews on Amazon” she said. Go figure…

In my experience, nothing to worry about here. We order samples from new suppliers every week and always pay with PayPal or Western Union. No problems yet.

However, for your first order, I would definitely recommend Trade Assurance.

Just have them send you an invoice with their PayPal account email and pay them with PayPal. I’ve never before heard of anyone insisting on Trade Assurance for samples.
