My freight forwarder is saying that US Customs is requesting Amazon’s tax ID number. Has anyone else run into this?
From Forwarder:
The use of the US Tax ID is not for ownership purposes, it is a requirement of US Customs that any shipment cleared under a foreign entity using a Customs Assigned No., requires a US Tax ID# to be stated on the entry.
This Tax# is usually provided by the receiver of the goods but can be another US Entity but cannot be the freight forwarders.
There is no liability for taxes or charges, US Customs just wants a US entity stated on the entry.

This is the place you want to go. Ignore the piece about charities and non profits. This is the SS4 form you need and the number, though there used to be a non toll free number. It probably won’t be till free from outside the US, but if you use Skype, the charge will be lower than a normal phone. Waiting times are now much better than the 98 minutes I was on hold when I applied last year, but be prepared to wait. Fill in as much of the SS4 as you can and be ready to write down the umber they give your a letter with it on will arrive in a few weeks. https://www.irs.gov/…/Obtaining-an-Employer…
Obtaining an Employer Identification Number for an Exempt Organization
How do I get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for my organization? You can apply for an EIN on-line, over the telephone, via fax or through the mail. See the instructions for Form SS-4 , Application for Employer I.D. Number, for further details.

You or your forwarder will probably need a customs broker, but you will still need an EIN somewhere along the track. When I usedFBAforward.com, they arranged this for me as part of their turnkey deal. There is, of course, a charge.
